Adopting Positive Coping Strategies in Times of Uncertainty

Are you feeling uncertain about the future? This may be quite a stressful time for you. If you are not careful, you could find yourself slipping into a downward spiral of anxiety or depression. Adopting positive coping strategies, may just be key during this time of uncertainty and going forward.

 

Here are seven (7) strategies that may assist you:

1. Take time to Pause and Reflect

You may be feeling overwhelmed about your current situation. This may be due to setbacks or challenges faced. Whatever your reason is for feeling overwhelmed, be sure to take time to reflect on what is making you feel this way and what is actually within your control to change. Jot this down and reflect of the triggers and source. Ask for help where needed.

 

2. Access Free Resources online

There are loads of free resources available online to help you. Whether it is a self-help video, an article, or downloadable toolkit, you can try searching for topics online like, building resilience, or managing stress and overwhelm or navigating change.

 

3. Connect with your Loved Ones

Connect with your loved ones to offer you support and encouragement, when the going gets tough. Likewise, do the same for them. Spend time with your loved ones with no mobile phones or devices but being fully present and enjoying the moment.

 

4. Practice Gratitude

At the beginning or end of each day, pause and reflect on the good things you are grateful for, or people you appreciate. Express your gratitude to yourself, write it down, or thank someone.

 

5. Manage your Time effectively

Managing your time effectively can help you reduce your stress levels. Digital tools are available online. Select a tool that works best for you. Plan your day ahead of schedule and block out time for each of your activities. Limit distractions, such as emails.  You may be experiencing an influx of emails right now. Set specific times in your day, to respond to your emails.

 

6. Set Boundaries

Be clear on your boundaries at work and in your personal life. Understand your values. Personal boundaries are the limits and rules we set for ourselves within relationships. Know your limits. Have self-respect. Learn to be assertive but respectful at the same time.

 

7. Manage your Stress

Stress can be triggered by different things. Become self-aware about what your stress triggers are and also about what makes you feel relaxed and at peace.  Jot down your stress trigger and also the activities that help you to relax. Take appropriate action to limit your stress triggers and spend more time on activities that help you to relax.  Maintain a healthy diet and exercise to also assist you in coping with your stress levels.

 

In closing, be encouraged to always remain hopeful, despite the storms faced in life. When challenges arise, choose to pause, take a deep breath, Count down from 5 to 1, and practice some of these tips shared.
